About Us

What is a Young Carer?

A Young Carer is someone under 18 who helps to care for a parent, sister, brother, grandparent or other individual because they have an illness, disability, mental health difficulty or misuses drugs or alcohol.

Are you a Young Carer?

  • Are you aged 5 – 18?
  • Are you helping someone get dressed, undressed, get washed or to move around safely etc.?
  • Are you helping with housework, shopping, cooking or other everyday tasks?
  • Are you helping to keep someone company and providing emotional support?
  • Does this mean you have little or no time for yourself?
  • Does this mean that you are unable to go out with friends or socialise?
  • Is your school life affected ie being late, absent, struggling to do homework?
  • Are you stressed or find it difficult to concentrate?

If you answered yes to any of the above:

  • Would you like someone to talk to?
  • Would you like somewhere to go?

South Tyneside Young Carers project could help.

What the project offers

The project offers the following support, advice and information to Young Carers and their families

Our Patron

After meeting Lee Tiffin at The Best of South Tyneside Award presentation in 2017, where he won Fundraiser of the year, we thought he would be an excellent patron for the Young Carers service. We felt privileged when he accepted the role and Lee began to raise awareness, through fundraising, of the difficulties and issues Young Carers face on a daily basis. Lee is the owner of Black Sheep Fitness Academy in South Tyneside, a gym offering a range of programs and classes to help people get in the best shape of their lives. He continues with the help of the Black Sheep members to fundraise and raise awareness of our inspirational Young Carers.
